For
those who don't know, Ayia Napa is the
up and coming resort and is certainly
the place to be this summer. Ever since
about 1990 many resorts have tried to
recreate Ibiza on a different island
but places such as Tenerife, Miami and
others have not come close. Cyprus'
resort Ayia Napa has seemed to created
a new vibe, backed up by the UK Garage
phenomenon and has now replaced Ibiza
as the new place to go. Cyprus is the
Mediterranean's third largest island
after Sicily and Sardinia, and is a
divided country - the Southern half
is Greek (where Ayia Napa lies) and
the Northern half is Turkish. |

Ayia Napa
It’s Official!! Ayia Napa is now the
undisputed Club Capital of Europe!. it's also
now being described as the 'World Famous Ayia
Napa' boasting, Nineteen Clubs, all within
a mile (walking distance) of each other (with
even more planned for this summer!!). Incorporating
it’s huge music mix ranging from the
obvious, UK Garage, Soul, Swing & R'n'B
to Funk and House, not to mention, 70's &
80's, Party Style and 70s, funk, soul, jazz
and disco. The majority of the clubs made
some improvements for last summer, if not
creating a complete new image, investing massively
in new sound systems, lighting effects and
lasers, introducing, live percussionists,
dancers and a huge line ups of, DJ’s,
MC’s & Live PA’s. Look out
for even more changes this summer with all
the roads surrounding the square being totally
pedestrian-ized! (no more cabs to run you
over!) to cater for the increased influx of
visitors expected this summer.
Cyprus has one of the strongest economies
in the world, mainly due to the tight currency
controls set by the Central Bank of Cyprus.
In addition to the restricted immigration
laws, both of which are relaxing year by
year, in course with Cyprus' accession to
Europe. Naturally currency exchanges vary
from day to day. Currently quite favourable,
actually reaching one for one against sterling
recently. Naturally, you can exchange your
cash and Travelers Cheques at banks, Exchange
Bureau's and an increasing amount of shops,
from Travel agents and Jewelers to Supermarkets.
Even the occasional pub will accept your
foreign currency. Most of which will offer
a good rate of exchange.
Although the economy is very healthy, you
will still find that most European currencies,
once exchanged make your buying power very
strong. The standard of living over here
is very high. Most things are lower costing
than throughout Europe, so get ready to
spend that hard-earned cash. If you do run
out of money, lose your Travelers Cheques
or find something you’d like to buy.
Western Union Money Transfer provide a 24
hour Cash Transfer Service from most European
countries, contact their Nicosia office
on Tel: 02 710400. They also have several
Agents in Ayia Napa, Larnaca and Protaras.
Ayia Napa over the last couple of years
has taken off big time and is now a serious
rival to Ibiza as the clubbing metropolis
of Europe. After being at the top for so
long may have caused complacency to set
in, or clubbers may become bored and look
elsewhere. Ibiza is where the Acid house
craze began in 1988 which helped changed
club life in Britain as we know it. The
illegal all night open air and tent raves
which followed suit in Britain led to the
authorities bowing to the demands of the
movement and passed laws allowing all night
clubbing instead of till 3.30
Ayia Napa caters for the Garage crowd but
has something for everyone. There are around
6 garage clubs and 4 house clubs all open
every night till around 4am. The entry price
is around £5-6. The bars open till
2am but play music till 1am a lot of them
have guest djs from England. There is even
a large Rock music bar!
