DJ Mystery

How long have you been DJing? I have been DJ'ing now since 1987(About 15 years).

How did you get started? I first got into mixing after seeing a group called M/A/R/R/s performing a tune called 'pump up the volume' back in '87 on the t.v. I just saw these two DJ's standing behind some decks, mixing and scratching, and i just wanted to do it, so I got hold of my mums Hi Fi record deck and wired it up via a mixer to my Hi Fi and it justy started from there.

Who was your inspiration/s? I used to listen to alot of pirate rado stations back in the late 80's/ early 90's. I was inspired by radio stations such as joy radio, sunrise fm and radioactive. DJ's who inspired me were, DJ Hype, J.J Frost, shy boyz and DJ Move ya. I loved the way everything was so continous, no gaps between the tunes, so i starte perfecting my mixing, and saved up and got my first set of proper decks with pitch controls in 1990/91, when the hardcore scene really kicked off. Thats what really got me going music wise.

What would you be doing if you weren't a DJ? If I wasnt a DJ, I would be doing something to do with music.

What other sort of music are you into? My main music im into is Drum & Bass, but im also well into, old skool hardcore, hip/hop/breaks (some) R&B and all the old classic house tunes

Favourite Club? My favourite clubs used to be 'sterns' in sussex and the rhythm station that used to be in aldershot, but they both closed down years ago.

Favourite Garage Tune of all time? Vally of the shadows - origin unknown, FZ - FZ, where love lives - alison limerick, and paid in full - Eric B and Rakim.

Any advice for up and coming DJs? Get your own style(dont just copy everyone else, Dont have an ego problem, Perfect your mixing as much as you can(anyone can just drop tunes in and out and thats just poor), keep trying hard to send out mix tapes, and promote yourself as much as you can.

Any Shout Outs? Shouts out to, My Girl Roz, My Mum (for all the years of putting up with my music), DJ step one, man like rory, sam, tom, Lukey B, Stuart P, Matt Sims, DJ move + the vinyl addiction crew (camden), Steve (dungeon master) F, James (Ruffneck), DJ Jamonee!, Tim H + Renata, all old 'radioactive, Energy FM crews,Respect to all @ 'Rage FM (Southcoast), Holdtight 2cool-promotions, keith + rich @ spinna (for the samples), Asif, M.M, Chris the Cruncherand everyone else ive forgotten.
