Pru Piper

How long have you been DJing? for about 9 years now.

How did you get started?just the usual way. was buying vinyl for ages and bought 2 decks and a mixer in 1993. started to play out at illegal parties wich was a usual way that times I think. I started with Hardcore/Gabba and followed the developement of UK Hardcore -> Darkcore -> Jungle -> Drum And Bass but stopped playing it in 1997 because I was bored of the more technoid, monotone sound of those days. I started playing Garage in 1997. But was listening to a lot of House and Garage thru all the years and going to the clubs.

Who was your inspiration/s? At the beginning Ratty - he was the best DJ for me in 92/93. Nowadays I'm not inspired by other DJs. I just develope my own style, but there are some DJs I rate highly for their technical skills or their perfect musical taste.

What would you be doing if you weren't a DJ? I'm sure that's not possible because I grow up with the DJ culture of early Hip Hop (I was fascinated of 'Beatstreet' because of the DJ). But I'm studying Design and Arts - so this is the second option for me.

What do you think about the commercialisation of UK Garage? It has it good aspects - open the music for a wider public, artists earning money to buy new equipment or concentrating on producing music instead of having a boring 9-5 job. Otherwise there are too much crap tunes around because everyone want to make some bucks. Also a bad side of commercialisation is that the so called 'Underground' will be dark, moody, monotone only. Once a style is successful the vocal/uplifting side is always defamed as the commercial side of the music. But when the whole style was undergeround the uplifting music was what the people liked and wanted to dance to. Was the same with Hardcore in 92/93, there are a lot of parallels in history.

What other sort of music are you into? With the rising amount of good D'n'B tunes - it's growing on me again. Also there are a lot of decent R'n'B and Deep House tunes around.

Any Residencys? "delicious" @ Hi Bar, Stuttgart / "sugar grooves" @ Drifters Club, Freiburg / Achtbar, Schwäbisch Gmünd / our own radio show called "delicious grooves" on Freies Radio für Stuttgart 97.2 FM / regular guestslots at a major radio station called Big FM

Favourite Club/Venue? sweet @ Raum 8, Munich - but closed now

Favourite Garage Tune of all time? 4 tunes sharing the throne: Livin' Large - Love Is What We Need, 24H Experience-Test Press E.P., Dem 2 - Destiny, Y-Tribe - Enough Is Enough .

Favourite Garage Tune at the moment? K-Warren feat. Lee-O - U Stress Me - brilliant!.

Any advice for up and coming DJs? Nothing will happen within in day. Keep the faith and try to make as many contacts to the scene as possible. It's an important part of beeing a DJ - good mixing only leads you to nowhere - but tight mixing and a lot of good contacts will make your day.

Any Shout Outs? my own crew GAL, Exquisit Promotions, Alex R.D., Giant Steps, Smash & Grab, Payin' Clients, Flirt Canada, ukgarage.de, Doug Cooper, DJ Fee, DJ Passion, Grant Nelson (better don't try to be a bar man at M1 the next time you're playing out here ;) he,he), U-Turn Promotions and ukgarageworldwide.com massive of course
